ROGC: The Big Jettison! (last show)
LIVE-mixed webcast re-hash: May 14th, 2006
This was the last live-mix webcast on s&S from the Oakistan studio. over 5 hours long – conveniently broken up into 1 hour chunks because…. well, lets just be reasonable.
PLAYLIST & INFO PAGE HERE!
This night we released the auxiliary rocket boosters and sand bags, folks.
This was the LAST live webcast show on s&S – at least for a good while. So, it seemed appropriate to needle-drop on highlights from past ROGC shows; say farewell, play some music, too many clips from The Omega Man DVD and whatever else fell into the mix.
Over the last year plus, I took to offering these regular little themed sonic rides … from low-concept to slightly above low-concept – creating the soundtracks of imaginary films on the fly! During that time, this little Sunday ROGC theater offered the improvised likes of vaudville dada-systems; semi stories, wishful documentaries; the sounds of party-favor science films and sometimes even just nice music.
With several varied but themed sources and elements routinely layered at once (via turntables, CD’s, mp3′s, loops, microphoned objects, a synth, sampler, etc…) , sonic terrains and narratives were revealed to me in the same moments as they were to those of you that tuned in for the LIVE webcasts.
Yay! live-mix!
Anyway…. if you enjoy any string of these clips & excerpts, please find and pay a listen to the entire original show, they’re all available in the archive! the latter ones have thorough playlist pages, I’ll get to the older ones as time allows.
It’s been a long time coming, but your studio host and the Oakistani catacomb studio will be permanently parting ways soon – I’ll be offing to the opposite side of the sphere to live, work and ideally re-establish a smooth phono-genic link with you all very soon by way of new downloadable, regionally inspired shows – so i hope you’ll pay an ear in time.
Snipping cables and burning receipts is gritty, dirty, time consuming business, so best to discontinue these with some weeks to spare. This is not a disappearing act entirely, as the regular day to day shirley & Spinoza stream will continue – and a new era of s&S radio is poking just around the corner. So, no worries…I hope you’ll stay tuned.
Where to?: returning to Xinjiang, P.R. China – for a good while. There’ll be more info here soon with more details about all that….but here, enjoy a little bit of the past.
-yours in sound & servitude,
-FC (s&S / ROGC/ your crotchety 99 year old intern, etc)

A lot of good times were had at these shows and much camaraderie and creativity was shared. This night, M.C. Schmidt (known to most as the pointier half of esteemed 70′s super group MATMOS) descended upon the s&S studio with his current crew of noise students from the San Francisco Art Institute.
For this show, his New Genres Orchestra “6″ class performed & relayed a LIVE, champion collection of original works.
Precision execution indeed! sounds to soothe and exfoliate!
Enjoy!

from the Matmos / MC pressmill:
—————————————>
RADIO LIVE TRANSMISSION: M. C. SCHMIDT AND THE NEW GENRES ORCHESTRA
Never underestimate the healing, Muse-protecting power of gainful employment. In M. C. Schmidt’s waking life as an instructor in the New Genres Department of the San Francisco Art Institute, he has been teaching a course called “Sound As Music” this semester. M. C. and his faithful crew have been improvising together, building instruments, and writing and rehearsing new compositions, when they aren’t busy reclining in total darkness on yoga mats and listening to voices, percussion-based music, old synthesizer albums, cut-ups and musique concrete, and general mayhem for hours and hours on end. They are taking a break from this busy schedule of meditation and study to share some of their recordings and to perform live on Shirley and Spinoza Internet radio on Sunday, April 30th at 8 PM.
—————————————>

Some Damn Intern: The Path of Least Resistance

…so that means “straight up spinning” – okay?
Unfortunately, someone seemed to have foolishly misplaced the studio key. While looking in all the obvious places however, station manager FC Mallard heard a light scratching (fingers AND vinyl) coming from within – either morse code for “SOS, SOS” or “Yo! Yo! Yo!” – we’re not sure. It looks like one sneaky individual of our usually trusty army of interns, ‘Li’l Bouncer’, intentionally locked himself inside to seize a bit of air-time.
While this might imply a problem for tonight’s LIVE webcast, we struck a deal wherein he promised to keep a steady, joyful inspired stream of favorite, fun sounds cascading from the decks and turntables for this extended slot
….and in RETURN, we promised to push vitamins, healthy, hearty soups and water (or at least water soluable tear-gas) through the keyhole until the jaws-of-life & a spanking paddle arrived from the emergency prop rental place.

ROGC: 17 Year Cicada
After 17 years of loveless, subterranian root munching, how about inviting all your swingin single pals for the biggest ‘hook-up’ party of your seemingly eternal pupal life!
Let’s make some noise!!! Yes, I realize not all of the cicadas in this episode are of the aforementioned variety…. But with all the merry-making, I don’t think anyone minded a handful of inter-species party crashers.
I’d discovered a bunch of cassette recordings online of a woman describing the month-long coming (and going) of 17 year Cicadas (Brood X) in 2004 and 1987. While her cicadas completely overloaded her recordings, her narration was what i was most attracted to… A sentimental biologist’s tone. This show was easily inspired. Insects are generally good for that.

LIVE: SAGAN returned!!!

Though it didn’t technically count as “returning” since they LIVE audio linked with the s&S studio from their home base. Hope you tuned in, blended yourself a future-shake, listened to the sounds of the year 6000 AD – and vainly made an attempt to graph the incomprehensible multi-dimensional routes signals took before reaching your ears. Featured were loads of field sounds recorded at the Chabot Observatory earlier in the day
Sagan = (Blevin Blectum, Lesser, and Wobbly).

Good riddence as i think this night was much more fruitful as a result.
