After having lived almost 15 years in China, I finally arrived in Auckland, New Zealand a few days before Christmas 2020 to reunite with my mate from whom I’d been separated for the past year due to Covid border closures. Having to first spend the holidays in mandatory Managed Isolation & Quarantine (MIQ) for 14 days, I brought my gear to assemble a little radio station in the hotel room that I’ve bound to, so that I could create, play and mix some sounds to pass the days. Free of China’s live-stream killing firewall, this archive is just under 7 hours (broken into 1-hour chunks) of my New Years LIVE-stream to celebrate the arrival of 2021 …alone in the room – but with any & all who decided to tune in! Thank you s&S Radio friends, for getting me through the darkest days of the past year. I’m out of here on January 5 and WE’RE hitting the road for a few days on our way south. Stay tuned! -RemOp (FC)

During the summer of 2019, Kate Whelen and I would sit down and improvise musically for 2 hours straight once or twice a week in a project we call ‘Ersilia’. I’d record these and then immediately play on s&S raw as ‘shows’. Since Covid-19 border closures have stranded us apart on two continents for almost all of 2020, we have not been able to go down these sonic rides together since. While we’ve waited things out, we managed to compile a number of excerpts to make this 70 minute, 14-track album in the summer of 2020. Have a listen and download from our Bandcamp page if you like.
Kate on the piano/synth and FC (yr Remote Operator) on samplers, synth & effects.

Sketch NOODLES is a collection of improvised bits of sound & music created live with electronics and field recordings specifically for the Quieter Time of Night program on Shirley & Spinoza Radio – often serving as background during spoken mic-breaks or as standalone pieces.
I’ve been asked by several curious listeners about the tracks that appear in the playlists labeled as “sketch_noodle+record_date” so decided to compile this series of selections from the past year to share. These sonic organisms, some pure texture, some more conventionally musical, rhythmic, drone or ‘ambient’ are for the most part, relatively unpolished and aside from trimming, fades and dynamics processing, remain unedited just as they were recorded live in s&S’s tiny radio studio in Dali, China. Still, when assembled, I think they stand quite well together as a nice, little enjoyable collection – I hope you agree.
Quieter Time of Night is a thrice daily 60-minute stream of more subdued, ambient-ish, textural sounds than the usual s&S Radio fare – and judging from what listeners often write in to say, particularly welcome in these precarious, anxious times. It is indeed as much for me as it is for you!
All tracks were recorded at s&S’s Banana-Hut Hideaway in Dali, Yunnan Province, China by me, Fausto Caceres (aka your Remote Operator) – compiled as I prepared my great escape August 2020
